Today is big day for Wale. Probably the biggest day in his musical career. Today Wale releases his debut album to the world and most importantly today is the day that he asks you to buy his music. A truly odd thing to occur in today music industry, someone actually asking the consumer to pay for their work after many years of just giving it away for free. This has been a long journey for the man from the DMV and we here at InternetPopular want to tell you about it so that you understand just how big of a day this actually is for Wale. To do that we need to start at the beginning.

It all starts with a guy who just wanted to be a part if Hip Hop. He was talented and more importantly he had the drive to achieve his goals and his dreams in the Hip Hop music scene. Coming from the DMV (District of Columbia, Maine, Virginia) was the first mountain he had to over come. As any of you Hip Hop kids reading this know, the DMV is not big producer of Hip Hop music… actually it’s not a big music producer of any genre. There wasn’t anyone for Wale to follow or relate too in the cities he lived in. Sure there were the musical influences from other cities to inspire him but they all came from the west coast, down south or from the Mecca. Cities that are nothing like the DMV and its more politically orientated lifestyle. Are hard place for a Hip Hop artist to come out from because you have to start locally before you can go national. A one in a million chance that is not taken by many and those that do quit due to the struggle to achieve that becomes daunting and impossible feeling. Some how though Wale was able to beat this first obstacle and was able to get enough support and love from the DMV to continue following his dreams. The success of Wale is in no small part thanks to the DMV and Wale being a real human being has always showed the love back. You might hate the DMV drops on some of his tracks but the people that were fans before anyone else appreciate it and that’s more important. Wale didn’t forget where he came from or who got him there in the first place.
Once he had the home town support Wale now had the task of getting his music to everyone that wanted to hear it. The best way to do that was through mixtapes.
Mixtapes have been the bread and butter of hip hop since it’s birth in NYC back I’m the day. Tapes are collected showcases or demos that allow a artist to self distribute his music to the masses. Thanks to the Internet and digital copies, mixtapes can now go globally instead of out of bodegas and street corners. I believe this is where the majority of those reading this found Wale. The early tapes of Hate is the New Love and Paint a Picture where great ways to find Wale’s early work. 100 Miles and Running and Back To The Feature are actually better albums then actual albums that you pay for. He put work and creativity into his tapes and it shows. He never held back because they were free, he gave us it all because all he wanted was for people to listen to his music. The other Mixtape to talk about is the Mixtape About Nothing in which Wale showed a true stroke of genius and based his entire tape around Seinfeld. It got a lot of notice and rightfully so, Wale is really one of the most talented MC’s in Hip Hop. He can give you that old school hip hop, he cab flow over techno beats and get the dance floor going, he can drop knowledge on you and talk about the pain and strife of the lives he knows, or he can give you that DC go-go sound that no one even heard of. Wale has many ways to entertain you, and they’re all real and he showed us them all for free.
Which brings us today. After working the Internet over through his website, MySpace (yeah people still use it), his twitter account, and through the blogs that love/hate him over the years, Wale has finally brought himself into the position to sell his music. It’s a place that all artists strive to achieve, and very few obtain especially in today music industry.
As we all know the music industry has been suffering for a long time. New artists can’t break into the industry due to the fact that music publishers are backing artists that are already marketable and can sell. People have stopped finding new musicians and have stopped buying music in general except through the digital platform. Hardcore music lovers are still out there but they are few and far between and are unable to support a industry that needs to grow with it’s artists. The only way to save the industry is to get people passionate about music and to get people interested in listening to new artists like Wale.
Wale needs some support today, because today is his day to help keep the music alive. He’s trying to stand up and be heard by the masses so that he can let people know that there is new Hip Hop out there. He needs to be heard so that industry takes notice and will know that real artists sell and you don’t just have to be a one hit wonder from a elevator to move units. He needs to be heard because he has a real voice.
Attention Deficit is the name of album. It’s in stores and on iTunes today. Keep good music alive by buying the album and telling people what you think about it.
